We then prepare a detailed inventory and appraisal of these assets, which is formally submitted to the court using Forms DE-160/161. This step ensures transparency and accountability throughout the probate process.
Moreover, accurately assessing the value of assets helps determine any potential estate taxes due. Conversely, failing to properly marshal assets can lead to delays, disputes among heirs, or even legal ramifications.
Ordinarily, this process is straightforward. However, there have been instances where locating and valuing certain assets proved challenging. I recall one case involving a deceased individual who had extensive coin collections stored in various locations. Tracking down all the coins and obtaining accurate appraisals required significant effort and expertise.
Nevertheless, we successfully marshaled all the assets, ensuring a fair and equitable distribution among the heirs.

Yes, locating hidden assets or understanding the true value of unique items can be tricky. For instance, according to a study by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils, nearly 20% of estates contain assets that were previously unknown to the family.
Another common challenge is dealing with digital assets, which are increasingly prevalent in today’s world. Determining ownership and access rights to online accounts, cryptocurrencies, and social media profiles can be complex.
